I have large rectangular platform that I want to lift on vertical axis.

I was wondering the pros/cons of using either approach or is something like a linear actuator best option? Can one method hold more weight than the other?

Anything you lift with a belt you'll need to add a brake to hold the load...
I'd go with lead screw...You lose about 40% in efficiency but you won't notice it
